Colon cancer risk factors

Routine screenings are the best possible defense against colorectal cancer, which is the fourth most common cancer in the United States. This is especially true if you possess a greater risk of developing the disease, due to certain lifestyle factors, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Family history
  • Heavy alcohol usage
  • Obesity
  • Physical inactivity
  • Poor diet
  • Race, particularly African American or Native American descent
  • Smoking

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), you may also be more susceptible to colon cancer if you're living with Type 2 diabetes, or regularly consuming red and processed meats. However, getting consistent exercise and eating high amounts of fruits, vegetables and whole grains can lower your risk.

Colon cancer screenings

Colon screenings are essential for staying informed of your body's level of health, as well as for uncovering any early signs of cancer. According to the ACS, you should get a colonoscopy every 10 years starting at 50 years old, when your risk of colon cancer increases, unless you have a family history of the disease.

A colonoscopy is the standard for colorectal cancer screenings, but we know that many are hesitant about the procedure. Depending on your personal history and certain risk factors, we have other available cancer screening options, including:

  • Biopsy – Removes a tissue sample that is sent for further examination
  • Digital rectal exam (DRE) – Checks for irregularities, detecting about half of colon cancers
  • Fecal occult blood test – Identifies blood in the stool
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy – Examines the rectum and lower part of the colon
  • Stool deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test – Looks for DNA changes in cells and detects blood in stool
  • Virtual colonoscopy – Uses computer software and a computerized tomography (CT) scan to check for polyps in the colon
  • X-ray of the large intestine or barium enema – Provides a picture of the colon and can assist in identifying polyps
