Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in Alexandria, Louisiana
TAVR surgery can help maximize your heart's function by replacing damaged aortic valves.
At Rapides Regional Medical Center, we prioritize TAVR over traditional heart surgery. TAVR places a new heart valve via a catheter that's inserted through the femoral artery, and does not require large incisions.

Conditions our heart specialists treat
Through valve replacement surgery, our experienced cardiovascular surgeons are able to treat a variety of serious heart issues, including:
- Aortic stenosis
- Aortic valve disease
- Heart failure
- Structural heart disease
Our TAVR program
If you are experiencing aortic valve disease, TAVR can potentially reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms felt from severe aortic stenosis. Most are able to quickly return to a normal lifestyle following the procedure.
Symptoms of aortic stenosis
TAVR is recommended for those experiencing severe aortic stenosis, which involves the narrowing of the aortic valve. According to the American Heart Association, more than 13 percent of Americans over the age of 75 develop aortic stenosis. This condition makes the heart work extremely hard, which can cause a shortage of blood distribution to the organs.
Aortic stenosis isn't always noticeable, but as it progresses, various symptoms can appear, such as:
- Chest pain
- Dizziness
- Extreme fatigue
- Fainting
- Shortness of breath
- Trouble completing daily activities
Our TAVR treatment process
Because of its safety and effectiveness, we prefer to use TAVR whenever possible for people of all ages. It is especially suited for individuals over 70 years old and for those with diabetes or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure, which can bring about less pain, minimal scarring, a shorter hospital stay and a faster overall recovery. If you require TAVR surgery, be sure to speak with your hospital team so you can make an informed decision about your treatment plan.
Your postsurgical experience
After the procedure, you can expect to be in the hospital for three to five days, with the potential for resuming normal activity in about 10 days. Our dedicated TAVR team will give you specific instructions, but follow-up care often includes a check-in call a few days after discharge, as well as an office visit with your doctor within 30 days of the procedure. Your in-person visit will likely include an echocardiogram to check your new valve, with the potential for other tests as well.
From there, your general cardiologist or primary care physician will develop a follow-up care plan to fit your unique needs. Once you have had the procedure, we recommend annual evaluations.
